Grant Program

As part of its ongoing commitment to rural communities across the country, the Foundation for Rural Service provide annual grants for communities served by NTCA (National Telecommunications Cooperative Association) members. The goal of this program is to support local efforts to build and sustain a high quality of life in rural America. Grants are concentrated in four major areas: Business Development, Community Development, Education, and Telecommunications. Grants can range from $250-$5,000, for a grand total of $25,000 that can go back in to rural communities, every year.

"Our hope is that these grants will allow rural communities to take that first step towards a project or plan that can help better the lives of those around them - whether it is smart boards in schools, a Main Street beautification project, better agricultural equipment for farms, start-up money for young entrepreneurs, or basic computer classes, we hope that people will take these funds and invest in their community in a meaningful way."

Elizabeth R. Crocker
Executive Director, Foundation for Rural Service

The Foundation gives priority to proposals that foster collaboration among different community agencies, and local government, reflect a comprehensive approach to community development, promote community participation and engagement, and make rural communities a better place to live and work.

Grants Awarded

Valley Schools Music Department - Distance Education - 2012

Awarded $3,400

Advanced Music Lessons Via Broadband Video Conferencing With Instructors From Brigham Young University. Valley High School’s population comes from a wide geographic area with some students traveling as long as one hour each way by bus to get to school each day. Developing the school’s orchestra program has been challenging due to these geographic separation’s in combination with a shortage of qualified instructors. This pilot program will provide one-on-one musical instruction by Brigham Young University students to the high school students from Valley High School using broadband video conferencing software.

Sirs,

I just wanted to inform you that we got a $3400 grant from the Foundation for Rural Service. They have chosen to fully fund the instruction time for BYU students to teach our Chamber Orchestra students via web conferencing.

The Foundation representative I spoke with said that our grant was at the top of the list, a "no-brainer", because it so perfectly reflected the goals of their grant program- -telecommunications-based distance learning that allows rural students the same educational opportunities as students from more populous areas.

To say that I am thrilled would be putting it mildly. I hope this opens up a new avenue for our students to receive private instruction in the future.

The Kanab Middle School was awarded a grant of $2,800 to purchase a classroom set of ActivExpression2 Devices. These devices will help promote classroom collaboration by allowing students and teachers to immediately view responses and discuss them during the lesson.
